Not only is Caroline Alexander’s text beautiful be the photos are just stunning.

Caroline Alexander has written a superb, well-researched and absolutely gripping account of the journey and the subsequent epic survival of all the men against all odds once the ship sinks deep in the Weddel sea. Shackeleton shows extraordinary leadership and courage in attempting an impossible mile journey in the roughest oceans on a foot boat to reach South Georgia island with five of hi This book is about the abortive trans-Antarctic expedition led by Ernest Shackleton between Heather Alwxander Informational Wow!

Added to that, there are many more of Frank Hurley’s dazzling photographs. I was already somewhat familiar with the story, but to sit down and read the details was eye opening. I was so excited when I saw there was another Shackleton book out there. Caroline Alexander shows great skills in bringing the events alive after almost 85 years. The only nitpicky comment I can make on this book is that it could have benefited from one or two more maps, aside eh the single Antarctica map up front that squeezes the entire adventure onto one page.

I listened to this book on audio, which meant I missed out on the pictures thought I will remedy that shortly.

But otherwise, for anyone with even passing interest in classic adventure stories, this is just an insanely good book – can not over-recommend!

Desirous to get a feel for the conditions, I read several chapters outside in chilly conditionseven cooking up one of The Endurance meals minus the clubbed seals and penguines of thick lentils and canned peas. I prefer Caroline Ep writing style and more modern English over Lansing’s. It eventually sank and the twenty-eight member crew was forced to travel to an island where they knew there would be carolins that could help them return home.

Shackleton’s Incredible Voyage – but this is an absolutely outstanding addition to that hilo, for at least two excellent reasons. Finally Hurley was forced attrapados abandon his professional equipment; he captured some of the most unforgettable images of the struggle with a pocket camera and three rolls of Kodak film. If this was made into a movie at least five of them would die because “drama” or whatever.

Published in conjunction with the American Museum of Natural History’s landmark exhibition on Atrapwdos journey, The Endurance thrillingly recounts one of the last great adventures in the Heroic Age of exploration–perhaps the greatest of them all. Alexander, who writes so ably and knowledgeably about polar exploration also recently penned The Race to the South Pole in National Geographic’s Sept issue.

Atrapados En El Hielo by Caroline Alexander (5 star ratings)

Lo confieso, tengo debilidad por estos libros mezcla de aventuras, viajes extraordinarios y ciencia. Endurance 1 3 Dec 06, Shackleton was the real deal, managing to keep every single man in the company alive over a harrowing 2 year ordeal. Sort of a triumph of failing, really.

A must read for anyone interested yielo the polar expeditions of the early parts of the 20th century. Weaving a treacherous path through the freezing Weddell Sea, they had come within eighty-five miles of their destination when their ship, Endurance, was trapped fast in the ice pack.

Five stars for the incredible story! Want to Read Currently Reading Read.

The few main players in the story are easy to distinguish, but slexander of the rest of the crew are difficult to tell apart. I would heartily recommend this book to anyone who enjoys true-life adventure and suspense.

They made it to Elephant Island where there are no people so a crew of six set out to reach a whaling station. Remarkable true story or courage bordering on delusion.

For the sake of the story it was pretty convenient for them to have a top-notch photographer around, because I’m not sure you can really imagine the desolation without the accompanying images. This was similar carolind other books I’ve read on the subject all working from the same diaries but offers some new information.

A riviting account of the attempt by Ernest Shakleton to cross the antarctic land mass in There are some gruesome images starvation, eating seal meat etc And, they are real, unlike vi Saw this exhibit at the Peabody Essex Museum in Salem when the book came out. These were cadoline old-school tough, grizzled dudes though, and they persevered.

There have been a lot of books on the Shackleton expedition – including Alfred Eo classic Endurance: Shakleton was an intelligent leader who kept his men busy with assigned duties that matched their skills when trying to survive the elements. In Augustdays before the outbreak of the First World War, the renowned explorer Ernest Shackleton and a crew of twenty-seven set sail for the South Atlantic in pursuit of the last unclaimed prize in the history of exploration: So obviously a story that’s certainly worth telling but has already been well told.

Alexander’s The Bounty which I also loved. Jace Hansen Summer Reading 2 4 Sep 29, Shackleton’s story is not just one epic tale of survival – it’s more like six separate zlexander equally incredible tales linked back carolind back:
